City Year. Give a Year. Change the World.

City Year. Give a Year. Change the World.City Year was founded on the belief that young people can change the world. City Year’s vision is that one day a year of service will become an opportunity for and common expectation of every young person. City Year is a diverse group of 17 to 24 year old adults that go out and do community service. There is a weekly stipened and a scholorship opportunity provided through Americorps. This is a full time thing and works just like a job you can get written up. I believe there is drug testing as well but don’t take me up on that. City Year builds character you are put in groups of people that you would not neccisarily chosen as a friend but they end up as a friend any way. City Year is not easy. I grew up in a house of domestic violence and a few times I had to sit through workshops on domestic violence. It was the most difficult thing I have ever done. I ended in tears. When I was a member Columbine happened. We all sat down to talk about it. We all worked in schools or with children so it was a scarry time for us. I think evey one should do City Year for the challenge and the people you meet.

Advertisements If you are interested in community service here is a site for you. Type in a zip and it will tell you what’s available in your area to do. It gives the organisation and the age group as well. Americorps is another great opportunity and they provide scholorships and give a weekly sipend . This site gives you some really good reasons why you should get involved

Be United and Help Sir Bobby Robson Foundation Raise the Money

Be United and Help Sir Bobby Robson Foundation Raise the Money Some things that are positive need funding so it’s important to me for those things to be out in the open. Even though I live in the USA and this is in the UK I felt this was still something that needs to be read. Sir Bobby Robson has launched a charitable foundation to help fight cancer.
The former England and Newcastle United manager hopes to raise at least £500,000 to help equip a specialist unit for the early detection and treatment of the disease.
Sir Bobby, who is battling cancer for the fifth time and has been told that this time it is incurable, said he wished the foundation to be his legacy to the world.
The Sir Bobby Robson Foundation will initially focus on the early detection and treatment of cancer and will also help support clinical trials of promising new treatments to tackle the disease.
Its first goal is to raise the money urgently required to set up The Sir Bobby Robson Cancer Trials Research Centre at the new Northern Centre for Cancer Care in Newcastle. The money raised will fund dedicated research facilities including a 12-bed unit with treatment rooms, a state-of-the-art laboratory and consulting facilities, all of which is being constructed at the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle.
The 75-year-old set up the foundation after being asked for help by the oncologist treating him, Dr Ruth Plummer.
He said: “I have had cancer five times now but I have had a wonderful life and I feel lucky to be alive. I owe my life to the people who have cared for me and treated me during the last 15 years in which I have had the disease.
“My oncologist Dr Ruth Plummer told me about a wonderful new unit they hoped to open at the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle for the early detection and treatment of cancer. But she told me there was no money to equip the unit, which it is hoped will be open by October, and asked me if I knew anyone who could help.
“I could not believe what she was telling me; so I spoke to my wife and some very good people close to me and I decided to use my name to create the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation, in the hope we can raise a lot of money very quickly. We want to help create a unit which will be not just the best in the region but the envy of the nation.
“I think I might be remembered for what I did in football. But the legacy I would like to leave behind is what I tried to do to help people with cancer live longer.” This article was taken from Journal Live go to for more info. Donations can be given at

Community Service: A Family’s Guide to Getting Involved

Community Service: A Family’s Guide to Getting Involved Community service is something that’s important to me. I’ve heard a lot of people say things like “Why would you want to help someone who can’t help themselves?” That’s just plain and simply not true. Everybody gets stuck in a rut sometimes everyone needs help. It doesn’t even need to be a person you’re helping it could be the environment. Don’t do it because it’s the “in” thing do it because you genuinely care. Pick up the garbage and scraps in your community, cut the plastic from your 6 pack of aluminum cans. Every little bit counts. Donate clothes to a second hand store but be careful second hand stores are meant for low income people and some over charge for things they got for free.
