Proof Positivity: Winter in Summer

Kevin Carroll, Vice President for prosthetics for Hanger Prosthetics and Orthotics, is one of the world’s leading prosthetists. He has designed prosthetics for dogs, an ostrich, a duck, and Winter the dolphin.

Winter was found off the coast of Florida, Caught in a crab trap. David Yates of Clearwater Marine Aquarium didn’t think she would survive. Staff and volunteers watched her every minute of the day.

She survived but lost her tail and they weren’t sure if she could adapt to life with out a tail. Kevin Carroll built a special flipper for Winter. Winter was only 3 months old when she lost her tail she had started swimming in the manner of a shark. The concern was that she would develop spinal injury swimming in the manner of a shark.

The research with Winter has provided breakthroughs with people who have lost limbs during the war and children who feel out of place because of birth defects have something in common with this dolphin.

This has made my point. Anyone can make a difference.
