Proof Positivity: Jailed Man Awarded

On April 21 The Global Health council announced the 2008 winner of the Johnathan Mann Award for Global Health and Human Rights to pediatrician Dr.Binayak Sen. “He is accused of links with Maoist rebels in Chhattisgarh, one of India’s poorest states where the rebels have a strong presence. The doctor denies the charge. During a court appearance earlier this year, Dr Sen said he did not support the Maoists.” Dr. Sen was awarded the R.R. Keithan Gold Medal by The Indian Academy of Social Sciences (ISSA) on 31 December 2007. The citation describes him as “one of the most eminent scientists” of India. “The award is for his outstanding contribution to the advancement of science of Nature-Man-Society and his honest and sincere application for the improvement of quality of life of the poor, the downtrodden and the oppressed people of Chhattisgarh.”
